Knighton was the quietest small town we have ever visited. The graveyard had one spectacular find plus some other unusual discoveries - just the sort of place we love to visit.

Ellesmere Cemetery, Ellesmere, Shropshire

The cemetery was situated on a hillside above the Mere. The graves were pointing towards all four points of the compass which made our surveying much harder.

A wooden effigy, dating from about 1330.

St Edith, Eaton-under-Heywood, Shropshire
(Click on an image for a larger version)

St Edith is said to be a daughter of King Egbert of Wessex. He founded a Benedictine nunnery in the Forest of Arden.

This wooden effigy, dating from about 1330, is of exceptional rarity being one
of only three in England and Wales that represent laymen as opposed to
members of the aristocracy or churchmen.

Although we moved to Shropshire three years ago we have only just surveyed this church that lies within three miles of our home.

You have to look twice to spot the spelling mistake for the first of these.
The second is more obvious.

Neither the first nor the last person to be caught out by a homophone. Can you spot it?

St Mary Magdalene, Penley, Wrexham
(Click on an image for a larger version)

There were a large number of Polish graves in the churchyard. The informative noticeboard near the entrance was a sensible way of explaining the history of this interesting site.
